Though drenched in cynicism, his work empathizes with the dizzying madness of our own humanity as it engages both so-called high and low culture. Perhaps most poetic among the many motifs present in Pettibon’s oeuvre is the surfer. In 1985, Pettibon began his series of surfers and waves – which he continues to work on to this day – popular for depicting a lone surfer silently carving “a line of beauty” along an impossibly large wave. This book spotlights a selection of more than one hundred surfers from the series, from smaller monochromatic works on paper to colorful large-scale paintings applied directly to the wall. For Pettibon’s protagonist in these works, surfing exists apart from all else. Momentarily he achieves sublimity on the wave, distant yet synced with turbulent reality. We are forced to confront our own scale: small and feeble in the face of the power of nature, what is beyond our control. We therefore chose a large format for the book. With texts by Jamie Brisick and Brian Lukacher, and contributions by Emily Erickson and Stephanie Gilmore.&nbsp;Published by David Zwirner Books. is an artist who writes, draws, photographs, interviews and performs. I had the pleasure of working with her on an artist book for her latest tactile performance BOEK-STEEN-PAPIER, where each audience member holds the book in their hands. What they see and read in the book reflects and interacts with what happens on the stage.The performance and book are made up of five ‘milestones’: events that have determined, influenced and enriched Annelies’ life. Each chapter starts from a personal experience, but zooms out to a universal story about strength and conviction. BOEK-STEEN-PAPIER has an open spine with a yellow thread. The chapters are divided and characterised by pastel-coloured papers from the Papyrus Rainbow range: light yellow, salmon, light blue, light green and violet. One of the chapters from the performance book was self-published by Annelies as an audio zine entitled ALFONSINA, you can buy it here. The front and back cover are pastel blue and it’s bound with a dark blue thread. Writings and drawings by Annelies Van Hullebusch. It is published to coincide with the completion of Stone Drawing (2014–2019), a grandiose work of art located on both external and internal faces of the stone wall that forms the west side of the new Library and Study Centre by Wright &amp; Wright Architects at St John’s College Oxford.Susanna creates site-specific and large-scale pieces, often in stone relief. For the book cover, we decided to emboss one of the original Red Drawings she made during her research phase at the beginning of this major project.
